Fiiiine I guess I'll use Steam again XD
This is an awesome demo and I had a lot of fun with the mechanics. I really enjoy fossil mining games, so this was an absolute blast to play! I look forward to the full release!
I love this little game! It reminds me of playing Fossil Fighters Frontier on my DS when I was a kid, except more chill. I wishlisted it on Steam and I really looking forward the final version!
I've been trying to 100% the demo but I just can't find the last lucky find :( are there 24 or only 23 for now?
There are 24 lucky finds but it is possible (maybe) to soft-lock yourself if you have already collected gold fossils for all the other fossils :-( In that case no more dig-sites will appear.
Is there anything from Fossil Fighters that you really enjoyed? Any mechanics or anything that we could use as inspiration for any mechanics or features in Fossil Quest?
I'm not 100% certain about the soft-locking... I'm on my laptop on holiday so I can't be 100% sure of the logic around it but I'm somewhat sure this is how it works.
One more thing: erm... not sure to share this but if you destroy I think 50 - 100 blocks without getting a lucky find you should be guaranteed to get a lucky find when you destroy the next block. If that doesn't happen then there is a bug.
Thanks for your reply! I don't think that I'm soft-locked, I'll try the 50-100 block trick and tell you if it works.
From what I remember of Fossil Fighters I liked the surprise of discovering the shape of the fossil while excavating it. Maybe you could try layering rocks to hide the fossil a bit more? I really enjoy the three dimensional aspect of excavating in your game though!
Also you could add something visually different when you get better quality fossils, or an all silver or all gold complete dinosaur. Maybe a themed painting that you can hang in the museum or a alternative version of the dinosaur with skin? Idk, just throwing ideas here :")
Sooo I broke well over 200 blocks and no lucky find... :(
Man im so sorry! There is another restriction in place which might be affecting you. Not all the lucky finds can be found at every location. The locations and lucky finds are as follows:
Colorado:
Karoo:
Montana:
Saskatchewan:
Let me know which one you're missing and where it spawns. Perhaps that area is closed?
thank you for the list! now I know that I'm looking for the Fire Opal in Colorado
Hi! This game is a gem and I can’t wait to play it on steam in its final version.
I still have some feedback to give:
- The big problem is that there is a memory leak, the game went from 700 MB of RAM usage to 16,000 in one hour.
- During the excavation, it would be nice to be able to dig and move at the same time.
- I find it regrettable to have a button that allows us to assemble our fossils instantly. I know we don’t have to use it but I think it takes some charm from this part of the game. Maybe replace it with a percentage to see how precise we are (and automatically place the bones in the right places if we exceed certain thresholds like 95%).
- I think it will be cool to see the rarities of fossils when placing them.
- It would be nice to have an option not to pause the game when you are on another window.
- Obviously more fossils, upgrade and everything, but I know it’s in progress!
Oh no that's a horrendous memory leak!!
I actually noticed it a while ago and worked to resolve it, which I thought I did. I wonder if other people are experiencing it..
Either way, thanks for reporting the issue and I'll take a look as soon as I'm home from my short holiday. So probably in the next week.
Your other notes and feedback align with a lot of other feedback we've gotten and we've got some ideas to address it for the main game. The only issue is the pausing when you leave the browser window.. I think that's a browser constraint that might be tricky to work around. Will take a look at it anyways.
Glad you enjoyed it. We've got a rough plan of the content we're aiming for in the main game and I hope its substantial enough!!
Hi, I played your game and made a video about it. Just wanted to let you know.
Wow thank you!! That's so lovely of you. I'm away at the moment (in a place with very poor internet) but when I get home I'll give it a watch. You can also share the video on the page which might be easier to get more views :-)
Well, there is an unspoken rule about not promoting your content in other people's comment sections, but since you're offering...
We don't mind you sharing videos here. We're all trying to get our stuff noticed and its completely relevant. We need people streaming our games and you need people making games! So it's a symbiotic relationship :-)
It's not like you're sharing your own game or porn/spam links (you'd be amazed how many we have to delete!)
Thanks for making the video!
I played this game back in October and when I saw that it had such major updates I had to play it again! Such a lovely game that I feel needs more eyes on it. It's like a blend of Animal Crossing and A cool math game I used to play called Diggy.
My video was recorded while I was extremely tired, But just know I loved every second of playing this simple game!
I love this game, its so cozy and nice and i'm getting along well with my museum
Although I don't really enjoy the movement of the character in the museum, I find that its too fast and i cant get to the stations without trying multiple times. Maybe that's just me though but otherwise it's an amazing game and i'll probably play it a lot!
Thanks for playing and sharing feedback! We want to work at improving the characters movement
Love the game so cozy and relaxing - only problem is that i'm on a mac and don't have the del key so can't remove exhibits and have run out of space :( Is there a way to change controls?, all the best for future development can't wait for the full game to come out on steam!
Ah sorry we don't have a controls list in the menu (we will add one for the next update!) but if you are on mac you should be able to use O as an alternative to delete exhibits :-)
Thankyou!!!!!!
Very fun game! I quite liked playing it. Wishlisted on Steam! (btw the primary image link leads to Flibbius McDoogle. The bullet point wishlist link leads to the right page though). Also just so you know this works on Firefox for me! Unsure what your testing is like with that, and if my various extensions are helping (though they usually hinder), but it works on my end!
omg thank so much for letting me know! Itch auto completes link inputs with links you have used before so that must be what happened there.
Glad to hear it works on Firefox. I don't know why it doesn't work for me in Firefox but at least its working for some people. Thanks for playing :-)
This is such a lovely game. Its so calming. I was supposed to go to bed early today but I ended up playing until 1 am haha.
Thank you that really means a lot to us that you enjoyed it! Good luck for tomorrow on the lack of sleep ;-)
Hey! game is great, i love it
any way to transfer save across web to the exe version?
ty for your work!
Ahh unfortunately not, sorry :-(
This is a very detailed and relaxing game! It could just be me, but it couldn't find how to remove an exhibit (ex: empty display case).
When you have it selected you can press 'delete' to remove it. Or O if you are playing in your browser on mac also works
Ok thank you!
This game scratches an itch that I can't find elsewhere. I really like growing a collection and organizing it, especially with fossils. I noticed some things you will need to fix and have some ideas about where you can take the game in the future.
For the most recent update:
Errors:
Diplodocus is too long for the current rooms; I had to rear it on its hind legs to keep the tail from clipping. Maybe make the hall longer than the wings of the manor.
When you are in the museum, you can sometimes open menus on top of menus.
Also, "trilobites" is misspelled on it's fact sheet.
Ideas:
It's be cool if you could rotate bones left and right as well as up and down so you could give the skeletons cool poses, though you would probably have to break them up into smaller pieces to make that work.
Sometimes museums will display a skull or a single bone (like a femur) on its own. It'd be nice if you could make smaller mounts for such bones that wouldn't get a thumbs down from the visitors but still less draw than the skeletons.
Having expansions to the left of the hall as well as the right would be more "museum like", as that is the layout most museums have.
As you add more fossils, it would be nice to differentiate dig sites by era in each location, i.e. only Jurassic fossils in a dig site.
I think the game should start out at a smaller scale. Maybe you have a truck instead of a plane and can only look for small fossils in the local gravel pits. A single bone, an ammonite, shells, and so on. Then you can raise funds to go to the famous dig sites with skeletons.
All in all, I'm really enjoying making a little museum in this game and look forward to what you have in store for the future!
Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to send us feedback and ideas. You're the best!!
We know the diplodocus is a bit too large and can only actually fit with his tail sticking out through the door but expanding the house would have meant delaying the update until after Christmas so we decided to just roll with it for now :-P Sorry about that, he is such a big boy lol
Thanks for spotting those other errors. I've made a note to fix that.
Your ideas:
These are all awesome! We are planning to sort of start over when making the full game so feedback like this is really helpful while we decide what should stay the same and what should change :-)
The house will essentially get rebuilt from scratch and we are planning on making it a huge manor house that has many many rooms and the player has to clean out or fix up rooms to expand their museum.
I really like your idea of starting smaller and just having single bone displays and keeping each dig site era specific.
We do have a new plan for how the locations will work which should make them more varied and interesting to visit.
The other big addition which is not in the current version at all but is coming, is a town with characters to meet and trade with.
We're really happy that you enjoyed playing the prototype and thanks again for taking the time to send us your thoughts on it. I hope you enjoy all our future updates!!
So unique and cute, love it. Only issue I had on the browser play is the sound glitching anytime you hold in a key (WASD + Space) other than that it ran quite smooth! - Only saw your note now which states to use the download option rather, which I missed so that could have been on me!
The W-A-S-D navigation keys are really buggy. Every time I press it, the menu pops up, I have to close it over and over again and it's very difficult to navigate. I play the Win version of the download.
Additionally, the worst error is the W key.
Hi, this is a bug that we have never seen or had reported before. I'm sorry you are experiencing this, it sounds really frustrating. Could you let me know which menu pops up and what scene this is happening in? We would like to figure out what's happening and fix it and any extra information would be really helpful
Pretty good I love the mechanics
the npc pathing could use some work I was playing browser
Thanks for playing. I have been working on the pathing the last day or two and have eliminated some bugs. Thanks for the feedback! :-)
LOVE THIS GAME!! As someone who has a hyper fixation on dinosaurs, it truly makes my soul happy. I was playing this game while on the phone with my friend while telling her about it. I said, "Did I mention i'm an old white man in this game?" and she said it makes it even better ₍₍⚞(˶˃ ᵕ ˂˶)⚟⁾⁾
YAY thank you for playing!!
We are adding character customisation too so you'll be able to play as anyone you like ;-)
Is there a plan to make it downloadable to Mac at some point? I love this game so much!
I'd love to make a mac build at some point. I will investigate it and see if it's possible.
it's not letting me delete exhibit pieces :(
Oh no. Sorry. Could let me know if you're playing in browser? On PC or mac?
You can press O on mac to delete an exhibit.
thank you! yes i'm playing on mac, the delete key doesn't do anything for me! such a cute game and i am having so much fun regardless!
neat little game so far, though not perfect
-managing the displays requires an awkward-to-reach key (P) as opposed to something more convenient
-the placement restrictions on the displays seem arbitrary at times
-wish there was a way to know from the expedition screen whether you've got everything obtained/at a certain rarity
Hi
The game is still a prototype so we totally agree it's got some rough edges and loads of things that need work 😅 Getting feedback here is super helpful while we start planning out the full game so thanks so much for taking the time to leave feedback!! We really appreciate it!
This game is really fun, I love how there's actual information of the fossils :)
I'm looking forward to the updates!
Really cute game! Very satisfying and cozy. The art is beautiful and I love that the fossils have information to learn more! I hope in the full version there are even more fossils, expeditions, and puzzles. I can't wait to see it.
I did run into one issue. When a majority of the fossils were in the first room and I was skipping digs, visitors would get stuck at the entrance. Unsure of what was the cause but it caused the income to dip immensely. Not all customers would get stuck, but maybe 5/9 would be stuck on top of each other at the entrance.
Thanks for reporting this bug. Were you playing on desktop or on the web?
I was playing the browser version!
Ahh ok. If it happens again, could you send me a screenshot? Would be helpful to see how you setup your exhibits. You can email the screenshot to me at lasse@unsigneddouble.com or send it to us via discord.
it says I have all the bones for the triceratops but I am missing the mandible and right foot? edit: it was just saying I had 100% when I didnt ! I got it now
Would it be possible to provide the following info:
- A screenshot/s of the problem?
- Are you playing in the browser or in a downloaded windows build?
Will try resolve it as soon as possible. Sorry for the bug!
It was fine ! It just says 100% or over 100% sometimes even when I dont have all the bones yet, but when I got the bones they showed up so its all get, it was just confusing. And im on browser!
Really fun game. I hope it gets more updates soon! (perhaps adding more expeditions? I got the upgrade, but it doesn't seem to do anything.)
Super creative and well made, I would rate it 5 stars! :)
question: have you decided how much the game will cost on Steam?
CANNOT WAIT FOR IT TO BE ON STEAM!
Thanks for playing.
The upgrade should unlock the Karoo area for you to explore? Did that not happen?
We will be updating the itch build, we try to update it every 2-3 weeks with new content.
We haven't completely decided on pricing for steam but I can say it won't be expensive, probably around the $10 mark. We will also have regional pricing so cheaper depending on where you live.
The game still needs a LOT of work, so it will most probably not be on steam for quite a few months (at least 12 months... sorry). Hopefully you can hang in while we do our best to add lots more features, mechanics and content!
So cute! I love how you actually put the exhibits together and see the different fossils, it's not just a "collecting" game, but little legit sim gameplay moments. When I realized I could actually read the entries in the exhibits, I GASPED. Love it! Creative and fun, now I want my own dinosaur museum.
Thank you for playing!
Played in browser on version 0.1.8
1) I'm surprised by the nice graphics! It immediately drew me into the world and everything fit in beautifully
2) UI and controls are very unintuitive. For example, right at the beginning I would at least draw arrows and an interaction button on the ground so that people know how to play right away, because I started playing with arrows instead of WSAD. Also, it would be good to display that you should interact with Space, for example with a small inscription (space)
3) A large part of the game, you will definitely spend digging, so you need to make it as fun as possible. Now it's actually terribly boring because there's nothing to it, I just wait 2 minutes before digging each square, uninteresting. I would put some kind of timer there (for example, before the authorities or locals come to you) so that people can change their mind about what to do. Also add some danger. In my opinion, the point should be that I'm looking for a certain part of the skeleton and I'll go get it quickly and ignore the other bones for the sake of time.
4) Radar, another unexplained thing how it works (and that it looks for bones at all). Too strong for me at the beginning of the game. Significantly limit its power at the beginning of the game. For example, cooldown after use, shorter range, random beam in a specified section. Or for example, set the radar to a specific bone I'm looking for.
5) I looked at the upgrades that can be purchased and it looks terribly uninteresting and boring. Nobody wants to play to unlock "10% faster digging". It is necessary to come up with "game changing" improvements, such as the aforementioned radar, a dog that digs with you or looks for a specific bone.
6) Cleaning bones is a very interesting mechanic and it surprised me very much!! I can imagine that cleaning would take place only in the base (again, the possibility of a whole range of upgrades for cleaning, such as various rinsing tubs, brushes, helpers ..). If cleaning was done at home, it would be possible to bring home, for example, garbage (by mistake of course) and only find out at home that it is not a bone.
7) I can imagine that small bones can be dug up and cleaned on the spot, but larger ones will be more like "clay balls" that could be extracted, for example, by helicopter and cleaned properly at the base.
8) Building a skeleton at the base.. well.. the graphics are nice, but actually kind of unnecessary in the gameplay. It would be more interesting to have the bone and not know what kind of dinosaur it is or what part it is from, so that the player would be happy that he is building a dinosaur from the "pile of bones", there would be some goal there, rather than just drag and drop.
9) Visitors to the museum.. well.. again such an unnecessary and long delay. It is not clear at first glance how it works and what it will bring to the player other than just clicking a button and waiting, it is not a game.
10) The graphics were a bit annoying when digging, when the individual cubes sometimes had a small gap between them and the background was glowing.
11) When building a clearing, the controls were confusing again, when it had to be ended with backspace, add an icon
12) When digging, I was very annoyed by holding the left mouse button to dig, when it then kicked in the air. It would be much more pleasant for me to A) dig using a key than hold the mouse in your hand. B) when I hold the dig and move, then proceed straight in a line, not stop every time, move and start digging again, it's frustrating.
13) In conclusion, I think that with a lot of tuning, the game could be a real success!! But you need to focus on what makes the game fun, what are the main fun mechanisms, what is the gameplay loop and really focus on it.
Thanks for all this detailed feedback.
At the moment the game is still a prototype so a LOT of what you've brought up are things we're planning on improving and addressing in the final game. We've only really worked on this for about a month and a half so I understand things are a bit unpolished at the moment.
We'll be adding a lot more mechanics to the final game around finding fossils, a town to explore, a research system, different tools, more interactivity during visitor mode etc etc. So there are a lot of cool features and improvements planned.
We've taken all your feedback to heart and thanks for taking the time to write it all out.
It's crazy how much you've done in such a short amount of time! For making digging more engaging, I think a more strategic mechanic like a limit to how many times you can swing your pickaxe might fit better than a timer. I think a timer would be too hectic and stressful compared to the relaxed feel of the rest of the game. Looking forward to seeing where this goes!
I cant get rid of exhibits on Chromebook :(
I'm sorry :-( we will fix this before the next update
Oh noes, backspace does not work as delete, and I can't get rid of exhibits cause I use a Chromebook.
Oh no I'm sorry! that sucks. We'll add an alternate hot key for mac for a future build :-)
i've been looking for one fossil for 15 ingame days
10/10 peak game
ahaha hope you found it! If you didn't and you think it might be bugged please let me know which fossil was eluding you. Thanks for playing!
my things are gone :( I came back to play and my museum is empty
Oh no sorry. When last did you play?
Unfortunately, during one of the updates the save games stopped working. But that was quite a long time ago.
Sorry for the late reply. It was few days ago, just before the last bug fix. Inventory listen them as placed, but there is nothing.
I tried to post an screenshot but the site wont let me
does it save?
It should save your progress yes. If you have any issues please let us know :-)
The downloaded version is safer in general.
I loooove this game sooo muchhh !! At first, it's kinda hard to understand how all the tools work but then it's okay
really fun game but it keeps crashing
Oh no thats awful. Sorry about that.
Are you using the windows download version? If you are, you could email us your player.log file?
It will be found here: C:\Users\[Your user name]\AppData\LocalLow\UnsignedDouble\Fossil Quest
You can email that file to lasse@unsigneddouble.com and we will take a look ASAP.
No, sorry, I just played in the browser, could that be it? The game crashed after 3 digging runs. After that, each time i went to dig, it would randomply crash before I could finish and reset everything to before that run, back to the museum. Even any shopping would be reset.
Very strange. But also hard to fix because of of many things that could be going wrong. Like fixing someone's car but from 5000km away:-(
You could try using a different browser, that might help? Or you could try downloading it if you're on Windows?
Sorry about this. It sucks for us having the game crash.
Hey, it's no worries. Might just be my browser. I'll give downloading it a try. Thanks for the great game!
love this game so much! though i've come across a glitch with the display table; when i go to 'assemble' it, nothing shows up despite having multiple display case fossils :(
Oh no. Could you give me a bit more information so we can try track down this bug?
It would be helpful to know if you were playing in browser? Were you resuming a save from a previous version? What happens if you do quit and resume, any chance that fixes it?
If you would be willing to email me a screen recording that would be really helpful too! romy@unsigneddouble.com
Sorry about this, we will try to figure it out and fix it asap!
Hey, I think I'm getting the same bug. The "assemble" works when you go with your character to the table, open it and then press the assemble button. It does not work when you move stuff around, select the table and click assemble.
Restart does not help. I'm playing on the web version
Strange. Thank so much for the extra info, that's really helpful!! We're going to try to reproduce it and get it fixed.
I think we have fixed this!
Yeap, fixed for me! Thanks!
it happens how racoon has said, instead of assembling anything, it just goes to the character. it happened in my first play, and coming back to a save, and even resetting the browser didn't fix it on my end. i use google chrome, and when i get home in a few hours, if you haven't been able to reproduce it, i'll happily send over a video of it :D
i know bugs like this happen, otherwise from what i've played the game is really good. its got a cosy vibe and is really simple in a good way.
I pushed an attempted fix about 10 - 15 mins ago. If you reload the browser / download the new version it should be fixed. Or is this problem still happening? If it's still happening you can send us a video of it, that would be super helpful. either to our email: lasse@unsigneddouble.com or you can send it to us on discord.
I'm so excited to watch this grow! It has all the makings of a game that will suck me in. It's so cozy and cute while being simple yet interactive. My only request/suggestion is as the game goes on, having different ways of aquiring fossils would be great. I know this game is brand new so you guys definitley have more planned and I'm STOKED!!!
Thank you so much!!! We are planning on having more variety and things to do in the full game so it doesn't get too repetitive :-)
This is awesome!!! So so fun and I love the technical design of the game! The dig site, scanner, and fossil excavating are all lovely and designed rlly well! It was a little confusing at first but I caught on quickly :)) would be great if there was a short tutorial or even just a page describing how it works!
Thanks for playing! Yes we are planning to add a bit of tutorialization as soon as possible.
Making tutorials can be a bit tricky and time consuming sometimes but we may, in the interim, just add a how to play page.
Great game. The info on the exhibits are a big plus. Wondering if the full version has an encyclopedia that comes with it, explaining all the unlocks. I spent way too much time on this demo. What a gem.
Yes we definitely plan on having some sort of encyclopaedia and a way to track what you've found vs what you haven't in the full game. So happy you enjoyed it :-)
this is the cutest fricken game ive ever played, distracted me from uni assignments but TOTALLY WORTH IT
Haha! Glad you enjoyed it :-)
A little gameplay, a little critique ;)
Thanks so much for doing a lets play! We agree with your feedback and do plan on adding some onboarding and also adding a pause menu with some audio controls :-)
I like your idea of being able to zoom in and out while you are in your museum. We might add that! Thanks!!
Amazing game, I had a blast. Good job dev!
