Turn-based combat

Use buffs, debuffs and attacks that synergise between you and your pets to win battles. The turn based combat system allows you to explore different attack and defence options without time pressure.

Caretaker Abilities to Unlock

Boss Fights

There are 6 dungeons to explore in the Abandoned Theme Park and a final-mega-super boss you can try your hand at defeating once you've rescued all 3 pets and have a complete party.

This is a prototype for an idea we would love to develop more in the future! We made this over the course of about 4 weeks to see if it's fun and has potential to turn into a more ambitious project. It might be a bit jank. If you find a bug please report it.

If we get the opportunity to expand on this game in the future: We would love to add pet mutations you can mix and match in your home lab, many more pets to rescue so you can choose your party from a menagerie of cute or scary pets, different areas to visit that synergise with certain skills, more enemies  and some base building options.

Thank you to Free Lives for funding the creation of this prototype through the Jam Dole fund!

We want your feedback and ideas to help this game reach its full potential! Here are some ways you can help us and get involved in the creation of Post Apocalyptic Pet Rescue:

(Fixed) Hi, I've been unable to make the character move from the first scene - clicking either on the chest or  the exit arrow had no effect (OS:Debian-based Linux, browser: chromium-based Vivaldi).

Edit: I just realized it's a WASD+LMB/Enter to interact to close objects mechanism, not a simple point and click with automatic moving, my bad! Could you please add this info to your description?

Edit 2: I managed a few battles with Rufus then Rufus & Bruno and I'm enjoying your game a lot so far. Some chests were too close to battle scenes' entrance and I've been unable to know what I found in (treats?).

The lack of inventory is a bit disturbing (I would like to be able to re-read the writings/flyers I found but maybe is it unnecessary - still, just for the pleasure of the art ^^). Also, a bit more background for the heroine (an Addams relative?) and the possibility of re-reading her story would be a nice add.

I love the carefully crafted dirty & sketchy original art, the easy-on-the-eyes color scheme and the chars & monsters' design ("Devil's Rejects" vibes) and well, everything here! Also, the progressive customization of the pets is a nice bonus - I suppose there'll be a way to play with the heroine's appearance too.

The progression of combats difficulty/new skills learning makes it easy without avoiding the possibility of losing - haven't used the [flee] button yet. The mix of attack/curing/mana gain seems well balanced.

Overall, a very funny experience so far and I'll come back later!

Edit 3: I thought I could continue my game, well... I refreshed the page and itch.io didn't load (gateway time-out) and the progression gadn't been saved. I hope you're planning to add  manual saving and export/import features :$

Thanks so much for trying out our game loophoc and leaving such great feedback!

The game is in very early stages and we have plans to add a lot of the content and ideas you had. Especially around worldbuilding! We'll be adding more content in general.

Adding save/load can be quite a task sometimes (depending on the game) and because this game has randomly generated dungeons its a bit tricky here but we will add saving/loading soon.

I'll update the description around the controls and the chest bug during combat is something we plan on fixing.

Again, thanks for playing and have a lovely day! Hopefully we'll have a BIG update at some point in the future and you'll come try it again. For now though normal work is taking up a lot of our time so it might be a few months before we can devote a lot of time to pet rescue :-(

Have a lovely day.

Love that this is both dark and wholesome at the same time :D
However, I think(?) I encountered a bug. I played until the second stage, and went back to the camp after I got the dog. Entered the dungeon again and fought the lion tamer. I won, but then the door to the next area wasn't there.

Narrative-wise, the game doesn't really make sense, but the vibe is *chef's kiss 👌💖

Really hoping you'll get the chance to expand this game and develop it further! Best of luck!

Sorry about the possible bug. If you beat the lion tamer then the lil Hamster should have been there, ready for you to add him to your pack. Maybe the hamster spawned behind some grass or something and was hard to see? or maybe it just never spawned and you hit a game breaking bug :-( Sorry about that.

Haha yeah the narrative is admittedly a bit vague. We would have liked to add more world-building and story elements.

Thanks so much for playing and leaving feedback!

Gameplay and Critique ;)

thanks so much for playing and sharing your play through and feedback! We really appreciate it :D

We made a short trailer

Really great game but super hard lol. Couldn't get past the third boss fight.

oh noooo you can do it I believe 💪😅

But really, sorry if it felt unbalanced!! If you can give me a bit more info about your run we can use it balance things better for the next update?

Things like which pets you had rescued, what mission you died on (if you remember the name), what you had leveled up, which skills you were using most in combat and what felt underpowerd to you? Any extra info would be really helpful if you're willing too share!

Thanks so much for playing!

I had only progressed enough through the game to rescue Rufus and had only reached a couple level ups like frenzy and eye-gouge but I felt like the bosses did way more damage during the fights than I could so it felt super unbalanced and almost impossible to win no matter what I tried doing differently. I believe the fight I couldn't get past despite multiple attempts were The Twins, each attack they did gave my character like 30+ damage meanwhile I was only able to do very little damage in comparison. Really well-done game though and I would love to progress further but I literally cannot beat that fight no matter what, the other fights up until that point I was able to beat first-try. And I would also recommend a way to auto-save after each fight you win because every time I lost that specific fight I had to start over from the start.

Oh no that's so early, you didn't even make it to the base :-( Sorry!!

That fight is possible to get through but we have been getting feedback from other playtesters that the poison stacks from the Blighted Blooms might be a bit OP if you don't take them out early? soooo we just released a patch with some balancing tweaks! Might help you if you're willing to give it another go. Had a few other improvements too.

A note on the auto-save: Once you get past that boss you make it to your bunker which acts as a save point between missions :-)

I tried the new patch and I think it definitely made it more balanced!! I binged the game until the end and was able to beat it!
